Map of Downtown Guadalajara
The city of Guadalajara was founded in 1542; at this time, the Spanish conquistadors left their mark through the architectural
influence of many of the city’s buildings and monuments. Metropolitan Guadalajara has a population of over 5 million
inhabitants. It is over 5,000 feet above sea level on a broad plateau. "La Barranca," is a formidable canyon,
and forms the city's natural northern boundary. Impressive mountains rise to the east and west of the city and Lake Chapala,
which is only a 45 minute drive, lies breath takingly to the south.
As part of our program, we provide walking tours of the city. Each tour offers an interestingly unique perspective about
Guadalajara’s colorful past and a chance to practice your language skills in a real life setting.
You will be encouraged during our local excursions of interest to ask questions pertaining to the sites that are shown. These will
be opportunities for you to interact with many cultural perspectives. Think of what can be gained by understanding not only a
language but of realizing profound things about what surrounds you in the culture. You will visit Guadalajara`s religious
foundations at Templo del Pilar and Templo de Santa Teresa, two small chapels that were built to house the citizens of the
what is now historic downtown and a few steps from our school.
There are many sites to visit in our city. Looking at a Map of Guadalajara, you will find that nestled together are the
following sites worth seeing: the Degollado Theater, Museo Regional, Rotonda de los Jalisciences Ilustres, Catedral, Templo de
Santa Maria de Gracia and Templo de San Agustin, Palacio de Gobierno, and the Plaza de Armas. You will be graced by each of
these edifices as you learn Spanish and take in the historical wealth of Guadalajara.
